Learning Direction Theory and the Winner s Curse
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report an experiment on a decision task by SAMUELSON and BAZERMAN (1985). Subjects submit a bid for an item with an unknown value. A winner’s curse phenomenon arises when subjects bid too high and make losses. Learning direction theory can account for this. However, other influences on behaviour can also be identified. We introduce impulse balance theory to make quantitative predictions on the basis of learning direction theory. We also look at monotonic ladder processes. It is shown that for this kind of Markov chains the impulse balance point is connected to the mode of the stationary distribution.

Bidding Rings and the Winners Curse: The Case of Federal O¤shore Oil and Gas Lease Auctions
This paper extends the theory of legal cartels to a¢ liated private value and common value environments, and applies the theory to explain joint bidding patterns in U.S. federal government o¤shore oil and gas lease auctions. We show that e¢ cient collusion is always possible in private value environments, but may not be in common value environments. In the latter case, fear of the winners curs...

متن کاملCompetitive experimentation with private information: The survivor's curse
We study a winner-take-all R&D race between two firms that are privately informed about the arrival rate of an invention. Over time, each firm only observes whether the opponent left the race or not. The equilibrium displays a strong herding effect, that we call a ‘survivor’s curse.’ Unlike in the case of symmetric information, the two firms may quit the race (nearly) simultaneously even when t...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Auction Theory for Undergraduate Students
This paper provides a non-technical introduction to auction theory. Despite the rapidly expanding literature using auction theory, and the few textbooks introducing it to upper-level Ph.D. students, most undergraduate textbooks do not cover the topic, or present short verbal descriptions about it. This paper o¤ers an introduction to auctions, emphasizing their common ingredients, analyzes optim...
متن کاملPhilipp an de Meulen and Christian Bredemeier A Political Winner ’ s Curse : Why Preventive Policies Pass Parliament so Narrowly
Preventive policy measures such as bailouts often pass parliament very narrowly. We present a model of asymmetric information between politicians and voters which rationalizes this narrow parliamentary outcome. A successful preventive policy impedes the verifi cation of its own necessity. When policy intervention is necessary but voters disagree ex-ante, individual politicians have an incentive...
